No Investigation into Bildt’s Stock Options
Chief Public Prosecutor Christer van der Kwast announced today that there will be no investigation into Foreign Minister Carl Bildt’s stock options in the oil and gas company Vostok Nafta.
When Bildt became Foreign Minister after September’s elections, he promised to sell his options in a company heavily involved in Russia’s Gazprom gas and oil giant.
Critics charged that he risked a conflict of interest in negotiations with Russia on a controversial gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea.
At a press conference Monday, Bildt said he acted exactly as he had promised. He said he saw no reason to forfeit his right to the options, which were his compensation for serving on the company board.
