Swedish Protest over Gaza Air Strikes
More demonstrations all over Sweden have been demanding an end to the Israeli air attacks into Gaza – protests this time taking place in the southern city of Karlskrona, Umeå in the far north, Gothenberg on the west coast and Uppsala just north of Stockholm.
In the Swedish capital itself, a second demonstration has taken place with hundreds gathering in a central square as they did over the weekend but this time marching to the Israeli embassy where speeches were made and an Israeli flag burned.
Speaking with Swedish Radio News, one of the demonstrators said she wants Sweden to speak while Palestinians bleed and can not get medicine or assistance.
Demonstrators held banners reading “Boycott Israel,” “Gaza is Bleeding,” and “Stop Killing our Children.”
The demonstration here was organized by Nael Touqan, chairman of the Palestinian Association in Stockholm, saying the protest is against the silence of the Western world to what he calls the massacres in Gaza.
When asked if Israel doesn’t have the right to defend itself against the missiles Hamas has been firing over the border from Gaza, he answers “yes” but that a response must be proportional, adding that this is not the way to get to Hamas and that all armed conflicts are pointless.
When asked what he wants the Swedish government to do, he says he hopes there are clever people in the Swedish government who can stand up and tell Israel that this is enough.
