Four School Days for First Graders?

Published lördag 25 april 2009 kl 14.19
Never on a Friday?

First graders in the southwestern municipality of Perstorp may soon skip school – with their teachers’ blessing: Perstorp’s elementary school principal Karin Thörnkvist told Daily Dagens Nyheter that, starting this fall, first-grade teaching will have to be reduced to four days a week for economic reasons.

’We just don’t have enough teachers and we can’t afford to hire more,’ Thörnkvist said. To solve the problem the school board has decided to let first-grade pupils stay home on Fridays.

The teachers’ union has criticized the plan. Union president Metta Fjelkner said the school would be violating the law that prescribed a five-day school week. By depriving the students of parts of their education the school would make the children pay for the municipality’s economic problems, Fjelkner said.
