Spring Warmth Triggers Fires
Rising temperatures have led to several forest fires in the southern half of Sweden. According to local authorities some fires were caused by negligence, but in a few cases police suspect arson.
Early Sunday the largest fire was raging northeast of Gothenburg. A fire department spokesman on the scene said the flames had already consumed more than 500 acres of forest.
As the fire was getting out of control, a number of homes had to be evacuated. Firefighters are being assisted by military volunteers and by helicopters. So far there are no reports of injuries.
