Swedish Radio Focus on Ties to Finland

Published tisdag 28 april 2009 kl 10.53
Swedish, Finnish flags

The Swedish public service radio is dedicating today’s programming in its main chanell P1 to the 200-year anniversary of the separation of Sweden and Finland - after Sweden lost its Eastern province to Russia back in 1809.

A quick survey of youngsters in both Nordic nations reveals that because studies in school have downgraded history so much in both countries, many do not know what the anniversary is all about.

Many also don’t know that Finland was part of the Swedish realm for 600 years and that even as part of the empire of the Russian czar, Finland still maintained much of the Swedish-styled administration and even the Swedish language along with Finnish - even after Finland’s independence at the end of WWI.
