Sri Lanka Bars Swedish Foreign Minister

The EU has warned Sri Lanka that its refusal to give a visa to Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is a ”serious” mistake.

Bildt was due to travel to the country together with his British and French colleagues for talks about the civil war currently raging in the country. But while his colleagues were welcome, Bildt was refused entry.

He says he doesn’t understand why the regime in Sri Lanka would treat a member of an international delegation in this way, that it is unacceptable diplomatic behaviour and that it will have consequences for Swedish-Sri Lankan relationships. Bildt was part of the delegation due to the fact that Sweden takes over the rotating presidency of the EU in July.

The Sri Lankan authorities say it isn’t a snub however, and that is Bildt is welcome to visit the country in May at what it called ”a mutually convenient time”.
