Söderling Through to Tennis Final

Robin Söderling celebrates after his win over Fernando Gonzales on Friday

Sweden's new tennis star Robin Söderling has smashed through to the final of the French Open after beating the hotly tipped Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4.

Söderling dominated the first half of the game, winning the first two sets in a row.  While the Chilean clawed his way back and won the next two sets, the Swede would not be denied, and in a closely fought fifth set he beat Gonzalez, who is ranked far higher than the underdog Söderling and had won all their confrontations so far.

24 year old Söderling has never played a Grand Slam semi-final before but is in the form of his life. This is the first time a Swede has made it to the final of the French Open since 2000.

Ranked number 23, Söderling already caused a sensation earlier in the week when he became the first player to beat four time champion Rafael Nadal on the Roland Garros clay. The win has been described as one of the greatest shocks in the open era.
