EU election

Reports of Low Turn-out

Published söndag 7 juni 2009 kl 17.41

Swedes are voting Sunday to send 18 representatives to the European Parliament. Press reports say that turn-out is low, as expected. According to one poll, one quarter of the people here didn’t even know there was an election.

On the other hand around 12 percent of the electorate took advantage of possibility to vote ahead.

According to the final polls, the two largest parties, the Social Democrats and conservative Moderates, have lost some support, with the Social Democrats hovering between 26 and 30 percent, and the conservative Moderates at around 19 percent.

Both polls indicate the Greens will do well, with just over 10 percent support. The Liberals come in around 11 percent, the Center Party is between 5 and 7 percent, and the Left Party between 5 and 6 percent. ´

The Christian Democrats, who some feared might not make the 4 percent threshold, are scoring about 5 percent.

On the other hand, the very EU-sceptic June List, which came in third last time around, seems like it won’t pass the threshold, although one poll shows it getting close with 3.8 percent support.

The surveys also confirm that the pro-filesharing Pirate Party should make it into the EU Parliament, with somewhere between 6.5 and 8.5 percent of the vote.

The polls close here in Sweden at 19:00 hrs UTC, 9:00 PM local time, when the first exit poll will be released by Swedish Television. But the official results won’t be announced until one hour later, after the polls close in the final EU country. We’ll have all the results here on the Radio Sweden website and on the radio.
