Pay-Per-Patient Criticised

Huddinge hospital rewards doctors after their 12th patient

Doctors in Stockholm may be speeding up their work to catch a cash bonus. Several hospitals in Stockholm reward doctors who see larger numbers of patients.

But in a report in broadsheet Dagens Nyheter medical staff express worry that this system causes a fall in the quality of patient care.

After seeing a certain number of patients (from 12-18) doctors start to get a bonus of about 13 dollars for each visit. But there are reports of some doctors seeing as many as 60 patients in a day, and visit time falling to just three or four minutes. And some nurses say that only rewarding doctors causes friction within medical teams.
