Sweden Outclasses Malta

Marcus Berg scores Sweden's fourth goal

Sweden's footballers kept up their slim hopes of qualifying for next summer's World Cup Finals in South Africa with a 4-0 win over lowly Malta in Gothenburg.

Following the National Day defeat to group leaders Denmark, Sweden started poorly and were lucky not to go behind to one of World football's minnows.

But following a first half striker from Kim Källström, three goals inside five second half minutes wrapped up the points and restored confidence and hopes of qualifying for a sixth straight major championship.

Kim Källström, Daniel Majstorovic, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Berg were on the scoresheet.

"It was an important goal," Källström said at halftime. "It made us loosen up. They played well defensively in the first half. I hope they will get tired."

The win put Sweden on nine points in fourth place , trailing third-place Portugal on goal difference. Hungary are second with 13.
