Rwandan Genocide-Suspect Extradited
A Rwandan man in Swedish custody suspected of genocide will be extradited to Rwanda. Sweden will thereby become the first EU country extraditing a person suspected of genocide to Rwanda. Swedish Minister of Justice Beatrice Ask told the news agency TT that Rwanda's legal system has improved significantly, and the Government now deems that he will get a fair trial in his home country.
Rwanda's public prosecution office asked for the 53-year old man to be extradited in August last year. He is suspected of killing a family of 25 during the genocide of 800,000 Tutsies in Rwanda in 1994.
The 53-year-old has denied the charges, and claims that his human rights will be violated if he returns to Rwanda because he is a hutu.
