Left Party Runs EU Stalking Horse

Eva-Britt Svensson ran as a protest

The new President of the EU parliament has been selected as Poland's former Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek, with the only other candidate, from the Swedish Left Party, losing by 555 votes to 89.

The reason for this huge disparity in votes is because the biggest groups in the EU Parliament, the main socialist and conservative blocs, had decided in advance who was to be selected. According to Sweden's Eva-Britt Svensson that was the main reason she stood - in order to at least have some debate on the issue rather than it just being stitched up behind closed doors.
