youth unemployment

No Qualification, No Job?

Published tisdag 14 juli 2009 kl 12.53

Youth unemployment is on the rise, and the Employers' Association says that high wages and job protection are the reason.

Twice as many people between 18 and 24 registered unemployed this June, compared with last year. This number - 48,000 - is adding to worries about how the young, especially those without a school leaving certificate, will fare as the economic crisis bites deeper.

Stefan Fölster, head economist at employers organisation Svensk Näringsliv says that rates for unemployment among young people with low levels of education are four times higher in Sweden than in Denmark. He says that many will find it harder to get into any kind of job, and that lowering starting wages and removing job protection for Swedish workers would help create more jobs.
