New Rules on Ballast Water

Published tisdag 14 juli 2009 kl 15.40
New restrictions for tankers

Ships carrying ballast water from one part of the world and emptying it into the waters somewhere else, carry with them marine alien species that can cause a lot of damage when introduced in areas where they do not belong.

An international convention to regulate the management of ballast water has taken a long time to be ratified. Now the Swedish Government is finally ready to do so.

Radio Sweden's Ulla Enberg spoke to Anders Hermansson, a senior civil servant at the Ministry of Entreprise,  and Mattias Rust, a marine biologist and shipping expert at  WWF Sweden, to find out why it has taken such a long time.
