Several Injured as Ferries Collided South of Stockholm
Two ferries carrying passengers collided on Thursday morning in the waters outside Nynäshamn, a port just south of Stockholm. The larger M/S Gotland crashed into the fast ferry HSC Gotlandia 2 while it was docking, due to thick fog in the area.
According to local rescue services, twenty people are reported to have minor injuries and suffering from shock, and five have been taken to hospital. One of the passengers aboard the ferry which was hit said to Swedish Radio News that it was when they were about to dock that the crash occurred.
“Suddenly there was a loud bang and one side sort of came in - people seemed shocked and started to move over from the left to the right side of the ferry. We realised that there was actually a hole in the boat – you could see outside,” said Pelle Hyppel, an eye witness on the ferry.
The Destination Gotland ferries operate the route between Nynäshamn and Visby on the Baltic island of Gotland, a holiday destination for many Swedes. Almost 2000 passengers are believed to have been aboard M/S Gotland when the crash occurred.
