switchboard overwhelmed

Gotland Ferry Disruptions

Following the collision between two ferries in Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm Thursday, thousands of travellers have been unable to rebook or cancel their tickets to the island of Gotland.

A ferry arriving from Gotland collided with another leaving for the island, a popular summer tourist destination. While one of the ships has resumed service, there have been serious disruptions in traffic to and from Gotland.

Swedish Radio News reports that many travellers have received SMS text messages telling them that they have been booked to another departure or instructing them to call the Destination Gotland ferry line.

But some passengers tell Swedish Radio News that they have been unable to reach the company’s switchboard for two days. Destination Gotland’s online booking has been closed, and is not expected to reopen until Monday afternoon.

The line’s head of marketing, Per-Erling Evensen, tells Swedish Radio News that they have put all available resources and brought in extra personnel to handle the telephone calls. He says that anyone who fails to contact the switchboard and chooses not to travel with a rebooked departure will get their money back.
