At least six people have been killed following a fire Saturday night at an apartment building in the western Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. All of those who died were members of the same family, a 42 year mother and five of her daughters, aged between 6 months and 16 years.

The family’s sixth child is in the hospital, with what are said to be life-threatening injuries. According to the police the family was found in the stairwell and were victims of smoke inhalation.

Another person still under treatment was found in the ground floor apartment where the fire began at around 10:00 PM Saturday.

Rescuers said the fire was limited to the one apartment, but other apartments in the six-floor building sustained smoke and water damage. Twenty-five to thirty people were evacuated from the building, and it is unclear when they can move back.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The police say there is no suspicion of an intentional crime, but rather of dangerous negligence.
