Multiple Fire Deaths Unusual

Published måndag 27 juli 2009 kl 11.21
The police have blocked off the apartment house where the deadly fire occurred.

Following a deadly apartment fire that claimed six lives, authorities have confirmed that fires rarely kill several people at once in Sweden. Ulf Erlandsson of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency told Swedish Radio News that it's especially unusual that children die in fires.

A mother and her five daughters died of smoke inhalation in a stairwell as they tried to flee from the fire in the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby Saturday night.

Multiple fire deaths only occur a few times per year in Sweden, according to Ulf Erlandsson, adding that children are seldom victims of fires unless they happen to start them themselves. The most common fire victim is a man around 60 years old who smokes and lives alone.
