Poor Information Contributed to Fire Deaths?

Published måndag 27 juli 2009 kl 11.58

At least six people died following a fire Saturday night at an apartment building in the western Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. According to the police they were found in the stairwell and were victims of smoke inhalation.

Rinkeby is a community where most of the residents are immigrants, and it’s been suggested that a cultural clash may have aggravated the situation. While in many countries the usual response to a fire is to evacuate, in Sweden people are told to remain in apartments until the rescue services arrive.

There’s also been criticism that fire safety information should have been provided in other languages besides Swedish.
