Swedish Disappointment with Losses in Athletics, Golf
Swedish athletics officials are deeply disappointed with the country’s failure to win any medals at the world championship in Berlin this past week. They point out that the absence of top performers like Carolina Klüft and Stefan Olsson reduced Sweden’s medal hopes just as much as the injuries of other hopefuls such as Susanna Kallur. The best result achieved by a Swedish athlete was Nicklas Wiberg’s seventh place in the decathlon. The only gold medal won for the entire Nordic region went to Norwegian javelin thrower Andreas Thorkildsen.
Sweden’s golf ladies were disappointed with losing this year’s Solheim Cup contest between the best female players of the United States and Europe. The tournament at Sugar Grove, Illinois, was the third consecutive success of the top American women golfers, bringing the total number to 8:3 in favor of the USA.
