Smokers Cost Councils Millions
Smokers are costing local councils in Sweden 367 million dollars a year in working time.
A new survey by the National Public Health Institute suggests that having a smokefree environment would save 2.6 billion Swedish kronor in people not taking smoking breaks and being off sick.
"We know that three out of four workers want to stop and most municipalities that have banned smoking at work also offer help" said Cecilia Birgersson at the Institute.
The Insititute counted the cost of smoking during work time by using an average hourly wage and an average time to smoke.
It also said that smokers take an extra eight days off sick a year compared to non smokers. 33 council municipality workplaces in Sweden are smoke free.
