Demonstrators protest the article outside the Swedish embassy in Tel Aviv

An Israeli lawyer has filed a suit against the Swedish newspaper “Aftonbladet” in New York, over a recent article accusing Israeli soldiers in Gaza of organ harvesting.

The lawyer, who works in Israel but has an address in New York, is demanding 7.5 million dollars from the newspaper for slandering Jews and Israelis, including himself, which he says has caused him economic losses.

One of the reasons he cites for the New York courts having jurisdiction is that the newspaper is available at the Swedish Church in New York and that the article says the organs have been sold in the United States.

American legal experts tell the TT news agency that it is very unlikely the case will ever reach court, and most likely the lawyer is just trying to express a protest about the article.

The Swedish government has rejected Israeli demands to distance itself from the article, saying that this would violate freedom of the press. (gw)
