Cuba Protests Dissident Visit
The Cuban Foreign Ministry has called in the Swedish chargé d’affaires because he had visited the family of an imprisoned dissident.
Swedish chargé d’affaires Ingemar Cederberg, along with fellow diplomats from Britain, Hungary, Poland, and Germany, met the wife of Darsi Ferrer last Thursday. Ferrer was sent to prison a month ago, convicted of buying two sacks of cement on the black market.
But Cederberg tells the TT news agency that the charge was just an excuse to imprison a critic of the regime, who has organized marches every year on International Human Rights Day.
According to Cederberg the visit was part of Europe’s efforts to support the democracy movement in Cuba.
Cederberg was called to the Cuban Foreign Ministry on Friday and told not to interfere with the island nation’s internal affairs.
