Sweden Aims For Top Spot

Published måndag 31 augusti 2009 kl 11.50

Sweden's women footballers will be aiming to secure top spot in Group C and avoid a quarter-final meeting with Germany when they play their final Euro 2009 Championship group game against England in Turku on Monday night.

Sweden have yet to concede a goal in wins over Russia 3-0 and Italy 2-0 to ensure a place in the quarter-finals and need a point to guarantee first place in the group. England, beaten 2-1 by Italy before coming back for a 3-2 win against Russia, could pip Sweden with another victory, but a point would make sure of progress.

Sweden's coach Thomas Dennerby told UEFA.com that his team were concentrating on extending their winning run and not thinking about avoiding Germany in the last eight.

"We are just concentrating on playing our 11th game in this competition [including qualifiers] without losing," he said. "I'm expecting a tough match, a fast-paced match. I've been impressed by England, mostly their attacking play. Their defending has not been at the level we have seen before but we know it will be hard."
