Supplies of Tamiflu Out of Date

Published måndag 31 augusti 2009 kl 13.32

Almost half of Sweden's supplies of the anti-viral drug tamiflu will pass their sell- by - date in February next year.

However, according to Anders Tegnell of Sweden's National Board of Health and Welfare, it's still safe for doctors to prescribe them after February.

Of the 1.6 million packets of tamiflu, 725,000 will become old by February.

Like most countries in Europe, Sweden began stockpiling tamiflu originally over fears of a bird flu pandemic.

Tamiflu, the leading anti influenza-virus drug, is said to be effective within the first 48 hours of infection.
