No More Money for Treating Gamblers

Published torsdag 3 september 2009 kl 11.15

Last year, 380 people were treated for gambling addiction in Sweden, but the National Institute of Public Health has decided to cut its funding for these projects. The Institute does not think it is their job to run such projects any more.

It is not clear who will do so instead. It is not compulsory for the local councils to offer such treatment, while the health authorities demand a medical diagnosis before they are prepared to do something.

The decision to withdraw the funding has been criticised, since the state virtually has a monopoly on running lottery and gambling in Sweden and therefore earns a lot of money from it. A new law regulating gambling in Sweden is on its way.
