EU meeting in Stockholm

Foreign Ministers Discuss Middle East

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt

On Friday, 24 of the 27 EU foreign ministers gather in central Stockholm for an informal meeting. Main topics of the meeting that will go on until Saturday are the Middle East conflict as well as the security situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Ahead of the meeting, Carl Bildt, foreign minister of current EU presidency holder Sweden, expressed his hope that the EU will be able to hammer out a joint position with the United States on the issue of Israeli settlements on Palestine territory.

Speaking to news agency TT, Bildt argued the Israeli government ought to put a halt to the extension of settlements in the occupied territories. The next step on the road to peace would have to be a respond from the Arab side, Bildt explained.

The Stockholm meeting will not take any formal decisions but is widely seen as a preparatory gathering ahead of several crucial EU and other international summits later this autumn.
