Over 60 percent of Swedish shops now have, or plan to install, CCTV, according to the Swedish Trade Federation. The cameras are most popular in food shops, where over 7 out of 10 shops have them installed.

According to the Federation over 54% of those that have installed cameras say that theft and shoplifting has decreased thanks to the cameras.

Speaking to newspaper Dagens Nyheter, heads of security for 3 of the major store chains in Sweden, supermarkets "Ica" and "Coop", and department store "Åhléns", say a better environment for staff and customers is the main reason they have installed the cameras.
