Cancelled Passport New Crimefighting Scheme

Published söndag 18 oktober 2009 kl 14.25

Swedish officials have starting cancelling runaway prisoners' passports as a way of getting them back to Sweden. According to news agency TT, officials say it's a much quicker way than going via Interpol, which can take many months.

If the Swedish authorities cancel the runaway's passport, then the runaway automatically becomes an illegal alien wherever he or she is staying, and the host country's migration authorities are usually quicker to expell them, usually within a fortnight.

The method has been used successfully 5 or 6 times over the past year, but for it to be used the suspect either has to be on the run from prison or bail conditions, or wanted internationally. The most common hiding place is in South East Asia, according to TT.
