Increase in Youngsters on Welfare
Local government leaders are warning that the number of unemployed young people turning to social security services for help has reached an alarming rate.
Unemployment among young Swedes is widespread. It varies from region to region and in the worst affected parts of the country it has soared up and is approaching 20 percent.
This means that many of the young people find it difficult to make ends meet and have been forced to seek social security assistance for their basic costs.
The Association of Local Authorities and Regions is sounding the alarm and says the local governments are facing a dire situation. And the problem is more acute among regions with fewer resources, while the richer ones are hardly affected.
The affected local governments say the problem facing young people is so serious that the national governments need to play a more active role in tackling the issue.
