Swedish Farmers to Sell Alcohol?

Published onsdag 28 oktober 2009 kl 15.38

As you may have heard earlier here on Radio Sweden, a lively question is whether Swedish farmers should be able to sell their wine and beer to visiting consumers – as is the case all over Europe.

But the Swedish center-right coalition government is split over the idea –  with some fearing that this would jeopardize the European Union’s approval of the exemption of Sweden from the free-trade policy by allowing this nation to keep its monopoly on the sale of alcohol here.

Some argue that it’s the monopoly’s restrictions on alcohol sales that saves this Nordic nation from plunging into unhealthy and costly over-indulgence.
