Baltic Sea Gas Pipeline

‘Russia Will Register Every Submarine’

Published tisdag 5 januari 2010 kl 08.46

The planned gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea will enable Russia to register submarines that cross the underwater construction. That’s according to analysts at the Swedish Defence Research Agency. Speaking to Swedish Radio news, Fredrik Westerlund, analyst at the Defence Research Agency, said Russian military will place sensors along the 1,200 kilometer pipeline between Russia and Germany.

These sensors will register every international submarine that runs through the area. As the pipeline also affects Swedish waters, it will naturally affect the maneuver space for Swedish submarines, said Westerlund. The gas pipeline which is built by the consortium Nord Stream and stretches from Vyborg in Russia to Greifswald in Germany, is scheduled to be up and running next year.
