Egg Yolks as Antibiotics
As resistance increases to many antibiotics, Swedish researchers say the yolks from ordinary chicken eggs could be a useful alternative.
Professor Hans Kollberg of Uppsala University Hospital tells Swedish Radio News that antibodies from egg yolks have been shown to help against cystic fibrosis. As hens have used the antibodies to fight harmful bacteria for hundreds of millions of years, he says, there’s no risk of resistance evolving.
The researchers say they plan to investigate if antibodies from egg yolks may also be useful in fighting intestinal diseases.
