Engine Fire Behind Airbus Incident
It's now been confirmed by air accident investigators that a fire in the left engine of an Iran Air owned Airbus caused it to career off the runaway moments before take-off at Arlanda airport on Saturday.
Leading investigator Stefan Christensen told Sveriges Radio Uppland that film footage showed the engine in trouble directly after it started to accelerate.
"A flame is seen in the left engine. We have also found parts of the engine at the scene of the accident," he told SR. What caused the fire is still unclear.
The plane swerved off the runway while slowly picking up speed for take-off. None of the 173 passengers were hurt and all on board were safely evacuated. The runway, one of three at Arlanda, was closed for a time causing delays but on Sunday air traffic was running smoothly again.
