Skier Dies After Falling Through Sea Ice

Published söndag 17 januari 2010 kl 13.15

Despite the combined efforts of sea, fire and helicopter rescue services on Saturday, a man has died in hospital today after falling through the ice while skiing on the frozen sea out in the Gothenburg archipelago. A female skier accompanying him is seriously ill in hospital.

The expressen newspaper writes that the couple plunged through the ice shortly after 3pm in Gothenburg's southern archipelago.

Sea and fire rescue services, police and ambulance crews were called and ten minutes later found that the woman had been pulled unconscious from the water where she had been for a long time. She was flown by air ambulance to Sahlgrenska university hospital where her condition on Sunday was described as serious but stable. The male skier who died was taken from the water some time later.

The tragedy has higlighted once again the dangers of skiing or ice skating on ocean ice at a time when temperatures are warming up after the extreme weather snap. The amount of snow on the ice and strong winds have also led to thinner ice.
