Malmström Questioned by Parliament

Published tisdag 19 januari 2010 kl 09.31

Sweden's proposed new European Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, was questioned in the European Parliament Tuesday morning about her new portfolio.

All commissioners have to go through the questioning and be approved by the parliament before starting their new jobs.

Malmström spoke about the importance of solidarity and said that she wants to develop a common EU policy for immigration and asylum. She wants to see an EU that efficiently deals with irregular immigration and has an efficient and humane system for repatriation. However, Malmström also pointed out that the EU needs immigrants to fill the workforce and she said she will work for a functioning system of legal immigration to Europe.

Malmström, a Liberal, has been proposed for the Home Affairs portfolio, which is to include police cooperation, border control, security issues and asylum and migration.

But the approval of the entire commission has been jeopardised by the resignation of the Bulgarian candidate.
