New Rumours Around Stieg Larsson

Published fredag 22 januari 2010 kl 15.26

Slander, lawyers, and lies: a new story about the late author Stieg Larsson has the trappings of one of his own thriller novels. A colleague of the bestselling author of the Millennium series has published a book accusing him of being a mediocre journalist, while another has suggested that he didn't even write the books himself at all.

The bestselling author died in 2004 at age 50 of a heart attack, before the first book of his Millennium trilogy was even published. But now, six years later, more than 20 million of his books have been sold in 42 countries, and intrigue regarding his enormous estate has not been lacking.

This time, though, the story has nothing to do with inheritance money. New developments concern the author himself.

Just last week, Larsson's former colleague Kurdo Baksi published a book about the man, called "My Friend Stieg Larsson." In it, he calls Larsson a mediocre journalist, and accuses him of flouting journalistic ethics by interviewing himself and his friends. And on Friday, another former colleague of Larsson's, Anders Hellberg, wrote an article in newspaper Dagens Nyheter to say that Larsson was simply a terrible writer, and that he doesn't understand how Larsson could have written the books at all.

Stieg Larsson's life partner, Eva Gabrielsson, has called the accusations "pure slander," while Larsson's father and brother haven't come out with any sort of commentary. Johan Hellekant, a journalist at Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, explains the consequences these accusations could have for Larsson's reputation.
