Sweden to Import Foreign Wolves

Published torsdag 28 januari 2010 kl 12.43

Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren says up to 20 wolves might be imported into this country over the next five years to offset genetic deficiencies in the Swedish animals because of inbreeding.

Wildlife experts here have sharply criticized the minister's defence of the recent culling of 27 wolves from the small Swedish wolf population of around 200.

Autopsies showed that the wolves shot had no serious disorders, and the shooting of healthy animals increased the chances of inbreeding in a population much smaller than in other European countries.
