Bildt Wants US & Russia to Disarm Nukes

In an op-ed published Tuesday in the New York Times, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt urged the United States and Russia to reduce their stockpiles of strategic nuclear weapons. Written together with Polish counterpart Radek Sikorski, the article called for the eventual elimination of these weapons, many of which are stationed on European soil.

They write that the tactical weapons seem to be placed in the region in “theoretical preparation” for a conflict in Europe, which they call an “outdated” notion. Although the exact number of weapons is secret, estimates by the International Commission on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament indicate that the US possesses about 200 active warheads in Western Europe, while Russia holds around 2,000, mostly in its western region.

Bildt and Sikorski call the nuclear weapons “dangerous remnants of a dangerous past” that “should not be allowed to endanger our common future.”

Writing in his blog, Carl Bildt says that he will bring up the demands in a speech at a disarmament conference in Paris next week.
