Ice on Blades Cuts Wind Power

Published onsdag 3 februari 2010 kl 10.02

Swedish energy experts are meeting in the northern city of Piteå to come up with cheaper ways to remove the ice from wind turbine blades.

Defrosting measures so far are considered too expensive and the harsh winter weather has been knocking out some of the turbines - reducing the badly-needed electricity from wind power

Meanwhile, highway authorities and motorists are clashing over a decision to ban studded winter tires from a Stockholm street to save the asphalt and avoid environmental pollution as chemicals are released in the air.

The motorists argue that those who refrain from such tires increase the risks for accidents on the snow and ice-covered highways.
