Nationalists See Rise in Party Members

Published onsdag 3 februari 2010 kl 16.56
Coveted spots in Sweden's parliament

A number of Swedish political parties have seen their membership numbers increase, according to magazine Dagens Samhälle. Among the parties already sitting in parliament, the Green Party gained the most new members.

But overall, the xenophobic party Sweden Democrats enjoyed the greatest increase—a whole 23% more people joined the party last year.

The Sweden Democrats is the largest party outside of the parliament, and has managed to garner more than the 4% parliamentary limit in a number of recent opinion polls.

Swedes will vote in a new parliament on September 19 this year.
