More Snow Chaos; Airport Train Derails

Published torsdag 4 februari 2010 kl 10.45
Braving the snow in Stockholm

Although snow has stopped falling in much of the country, the winter storms of the past few days continue to cause problems throughout Sweden. A high-speed Arlanda Express train en route from Stockholm to Arlanda Airport jumped its tracks on Thursday morning, while more roofs have buckled under the weight of the snow.

None of the five passengers onboard were injured when the train derailed just north of Ulriksdal at seven o’clock in the morning. The train was already travelling extremely slowly, just 10 kilometers per hour, when its wheels lost contact with the tracks.

Much local and long-distance train traffic will be delayed as a result, and buses throughout Stockholm are off schedule because of the snow on the roads.

The roofs of two separate tennis halls in the Stockholm area have also collapsed, one in Rönninge on Wednesday night and another in Botkyrka on Thursday morning. Eleven people were in the Rönninge tennis center when its roof fell in, but everyone escaped without injury.
