"Stureby" Teen Murderers Get 20 Months

A court of appeals has upheld the original sentences of two teenagers convicted of a love triangle murder in June 2009. A 16-year-old boy and his 16-year-old former girlfriend will each serve one year and eight months at a juvenile detention center for their crimes, news agency TT reports.

The boy was convicted of murder and the girl of accessory to murder in a case that received enormous press attention throughout the second half of last year. The 16-year-old girl had brought the appeal in order to get the conviction overturned, but the court found that she had used her “psychological influence” to “cause the boy to kill the 15-year-old girl.”

The teenagers' victim was beaten and strangled in a forest grove after a party in the Stockholm suburb of Stureby. The 16-year-old boy later confessed to killing her, but the girl denied having anything to do with the murder.

But SMS messages featured in the trial gave evidence to show how the girl jealously egged on her then boyfriend to kill the 15-year-old girl after he admitted to kissing her. Yet she maintained that she had sent the messages in jest, and that she never thought the boy capable of murder.

The court of appeals disagreed, however, concluding that the girl knew that there was a risk that the boy would kill—and that she was indifferent to the 15-year-old’s fate.

The court did not raise the amount of damages awarded to the murdered girl’s family for psychological pain, though. Each of the two 16-year-olds will pay the equivalent of 8,000 US dollars to the girl’s parents and 3,300 dollars to the girl’s older brother.
