Back to Basics in Teacher Training

back to basics

Next week's government proposals on reforming teacher training will include plans for a reintroduction of training for junior level school teachers for grades 1-3.

At present, teachers are trained to teach years 1-6 and Education minister Jan Björklund said that broadening junior school teacher training in 1985 to include years 4, 5 and 6 was "a mistake" with the result that teachers didn't possess a deep enough knowledge to concentrate on teaching youngsters the basics of reading, writings and mathematics.

The government has been critical of the levels of skills in reading, writing and maths amongst children in years 1-3.

Sweden has nine years of compulsory schooling from seven years old with an option of a voluntary school start at six years.
