Uproar About Goal Change in Aid

Published fredag 12 februari 2010 kl 14.40
Swedish minister for development assistance Gunilla Carlsson

The Swedish government unveiled the “Council for Industry, Commerce and Development" in Stockholm today, a new agency with the aim of lifting the purpose of economic growth in Swedish development assistance. The decision was received with a healthy dose of skepticism, not least among the opposition.

When the government and its minister for development assistance decide that economic growth is a goal when assisting countries in need, it is bound to cause reactions. Criticism has come not only from the opposition, which ruled it out as a self gaining atempt, but also from more neutral organisations.
