Passengers evacuated from underground train

Published tisdag 16 februari 2010 kl 10.35

Following reports of smoke in an underground train station in central Stockholm this morning, trains were stopped causing huge delays during rush hour.

When the alert was raised at Östermalmstorgs station 08.52 am, passengers were unable to leave a train between Gamla Stan and Central Station for 40 minutes until emergency services could evacuate them along the train tracks.

“We are in the tunnel and queuing to get to T-Centralen underground station. SL (Stockholm Transport) say was a power failure but they are warning us about current in the tracks. It’s all very strange,” one passenger told Swedish newspaper Expressen by telephone.

No one was hurt in the incident and the fire brigade says the cause of the alarm was dust from a nearby building site.
