Small Parties Are Different
According to a survey conducted for Swedish Radio by Statistics Sweden, men dominate the election lists from the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrat Party, the pro file-sharing Pirate Party, and the Pensioners’ Party.
Three-quarters of the Sweden Democrat candidates are men.
As might be expected, women dominate in the Feminist Initiative. Eighty percent of their candidates are women.
The small party candidates also have incomes closer to the national average, while the established parliamentary parties have a higher proportion of high income earners, and a much more equal division between men and women.
Stockholm University political scientist Lenita Freidenvall tells Swedish Radio News that the average incomes reflect the membership of the small parties. In the case of the Pirate Party, she says, another explanation is that around half their candidates are under the age of 30.
On the other hand, nearly every candidate for the Pensioner’s Party is over the age of 65.
