Greenpeace Protest at Forsmark

Published måndag 14 juni 2010 kl 10.41

Between 10 and 15 Greenpeace demonstrators are on the roof of one of the nuclear reactor buildings at Forsmark on the coast north of Stockholm - protesting over Thursday's parliamentary vote to replace aging atomic reactors.

Police have detained some 50 environmental activists who used a crane to lift colleagues over the fence - and claim that the situation at the plant is calm.

Administrators at the plant say that security measures are sufficient, that the protestors are not able to enter the reactor building itself and that the action is seen as a peaceful protest.

The protestors are demanding that Sweden honor a national referendum decision to phase out nuclear power.

Greenpeace wants the money to be spent on replacing old reactors to be used instead on alternative energy sources.

Two reactors have already been shut down and 10 more are still on line.
