Pilots' Strike Grounds Swedish Flights
Upwards of 23,000 passengers on about 230 different flights were stranded as Swedish pilots went on strike on Wednesday. About 2,000 pilots abstained from work as a result of stalled labor negotiations between the pilots’ union and their employers.
The strike lasted between 5 AM and 1 PM, hitting hardest against airline SAS, which had to cancel 107 flights. Although the strike mostly had a domestic effect—all flights within Sweden were grounded—some international departures had to be cancelled as well.
According to the pilots’ union, the main issue at stake involves the firing of union pilots in favor of freelance workers hired through recruitment agencies. Union officials point to the example of airline Avia Express, which laid off its 80 pilots as of June 17 and wants to bring in non-unionized pilots.
