European Pressure to Stop Deportations to Iraq

The Council of Europe has called upon the government to reign in Swedish migration authorities after the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees criticized Sweden for forcibly deporting refugees back to Iraq.

Thomas Hammarberg, UN Commissioner for Human Rights, tells Swedish Radio News that the Office’s authority in international migration issues will be undermined if the Swedish government fails to act.

“When European governments including Sweden begin to dismiss the serious warnings coming from the UN Commissioner for Refugees, the simple fact of the matter is that it creates great risk for individual peoples’ lives,” Hammarberg said.
